What is MECE?
MECE stands for Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive. It is a structuring principle used in consulting to break complex problems into distinct, non-overlapping categories that together cover every possible aspect of the issue being analyzed.
MECE is the foundational thinking framework at every top consulting firm. When you structure an analysis as MECE, each bucket you create must be independent of the others (mutually exclusive) and all buckets together must account for every possibility (collectively exhaustive). This prevents double-counting and ensures nothing is missed.
In a case interview, a MECE structure signals disciplined, logical thinking. For example, if asked why profits declined, a MECE breakdown might split the problem into Revenue and Costs. Revenue can further split into Price and Volume, while Costs split into Fixed and Variable. Each sub-bucket is distinct and together they capture the full picture.
Practicing MECE thinking helps you move beyond surface-level brainstorming to structured problem-solving. Interviewers look for candidates who can instinctively organize information this way, because it mirrors how consultants deliver clear, actionable recommendations to clients.
Real-world example
McKinsey consultants analyzing a retailer's declining sales structured the problem MECE: (1) Store-level factors (foot traffic, conversion, basket size) vs. (2) External factors (competition, macro trends). This ensured no driver was double-counted or overlooked.
