What is Burn Rate?
Burn rate is the pace at which a company spends its cash reserves before generating positive cash flow from operations. Gross burn rate is total monthly cash outflow, while net burn rate subtracts any revenue. Combined with cash on hand, it determines the company's runway—how many months until funding runs out.
Burn rate is the vital sign of any pre-profitable startup. Investors and board members monitor it closely because it directly determines how much time a company has to reach profitability or secure additional funding. Runway = Cash on Hand / Net Monthly Burn Rate. A company with $10M in the bank burning $500K/month has 20 months of runway.
Burn rate management involves balancing growth investment against survival. Burning too slowly might mean losing market share to faster-moving competitors. Burning too fast might mean running out of cash before achieving product-market fit. The optimal burn rate depends on the company's stage, market opportunity, and fundraising environment.
In case interviews, burn rate questions often appear in startup strategy cases. You might be asked how a startup should allocate a new funding round, when it should cut costs, or whether it should pivot its strategy based on remaining runway. Understanding the relationship between burn rate, revenue growth, and path to profitability is essential.
Real-world example
WeWork was burning approximately $700M per quarter in 2019, with only $2.5B in cash reserves, giving it less than a year of runway. This unsustainable burn rate was a key factor in its failed IPO attempt.
